Two days in the heart of Oman's ancient interior — this overnight journey through the Nizwa region is a deep dive into the history, architecture, and culture that shaped a civilisation.
Depart Muscat and head into the interior to Nizwa, Oman's former capital and still its cultural heartbeat. Spend the morning exploring the legendary Nizwa Souq — a living marketplace of silver khanjar daggers, hand-woven textiles, fragrant frankincense, and fresh local produce — before climbing the great circular tower of Nizwa Fort, the largest of its kind in Arabia, for sweeping views over the ancient oasis city. After lunch, continue to Bahla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where one of the longest mud-brick walls in the world stretches across the plain and a formidable medieval fort looms above the date palm groves. The day concludes at the magnificent Jabrin Castle — a 17th-century palace-fortress of ornate carved plasterwork, painted ceilings, and mysterious hidden rooms, one of the most beautiful buildings in all of Oman. Overnight in a characterful hotel in the Nizwa region.
On day two, rise early and drive into the cool mountains to the enchanting village of Misfat Al Abrieein — a terraced hillside settlement of honey-coloured mud-brick houses, ancient falaj irrigation channels, and lush gardens of pomegranate and walnut trees. Wander its narrow stone lanes, breathe the mountain air, and experience a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries, before heading back to Muscat in the afternoon.
