Rising from the flat gravel plains of Oman's interior, the Wahiba Sands — also known as Sharqiyah Sands — are one of the most spectacular desert landscapes in the Arabian Peninsula. A sea of golden and rust-red dunes stretching over 12,500 square kilometres, the Wahiba Sands are home to Bedouin communities, extraordinary wildlife, and some of the most breathtaking sunsets you will ever witness.
What is Wahiba Sands?
The Wahiba Sands is a desert region in the Sharqiyah (Eastern) governorate of Oman, approximately 200 kilometres south of Muscat. Unlike the flat salt plains found elsewhere in the Arabian Peninsula, Wahiba Sands features dramatic rolling dunes that can rise to over 100 metres in height. The sands are famous for their rich auburn and gold colouring — particularly vivid at sunrise and sunset — and for the Bedouin communities that have called this desert home for generations.
How to Get to Wahiba Sands from Muscat
The most convenient way to reach Wahiba Sands from Muscat is by private 4x4 vehicle. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, passing through the historic town of Ibra before the landscape gradually shifts from rocky desert plains to the soft dunes of the Sharqiyah region. A 4x4 vehicle is mandatory for driving into the dunes themselves — standard cars will become stuck in the sand.

Things to Do in Wahiba Sands
Dune Bashing
One of the great adrenaline experiences of Oman — hold on tight as your 4x4 driver navigates steep dune faces at speed, climbing and descending the towering sand walls of the Wahiba. Thrilling for adults and older children.
Camel Riding
Riding a camel across the undulating dunes at sunset is one of the quintessential Arabian experiences. Camels are the original desert transport — slow, majestic, and surprisingly comfortable — and seeing the desert from their back gives you a completely different perspective on the landscape.
Bedouin Family Visit
The Wahiba Sands is still home to Bedouin families who maintain a semi-nomadic lifestyle in the desert. Visiting a Bedouin home and being welcomed with fragrant Arabic coffee and sweet dates is a genuine cultural experience that offers a rare glimpse into a way of life that has existed in these sands for centuries.
Desert Overnight
Spending a night in the Wahiba Sands is an experience unlike any other. As the sun sets and the desert temperature drops, the sky above fills with stars of extraordinary clarity — with zero light pollution for hundreds of kilometres, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye. Fall asleep to absolute silence and wake to a desert sunrise that turns the dunes from deep purple to blazing gold.
Quad Biking
For those wanting even more desert adventure, quad biking through the Wahiba Sands delivers 30 minutes of pure exhilaration — navigating the dunes at speed on your own four-wheel vehicle.
Best Time to Visit Wahiba Sands
The ideal time to visit Wahiba Sands is between October and April, when temperatures are pleasant during the day (25–35°C) and cool at night (15–20°C). Summer visits (June–August) are possible but temperatures can exceed 45°C, making outdoor activities uncomfortable.
